What's in the July/August 2011 issue of Embroidery?

Editorial
Quilting and patchwork are amongst the most familiar textile crafts to us all. Both comforting and laden with history, they embody the virtues of the best kind of making - the kind that is both practical, decorative and sociable (if you so wish!) at the same time.
During the past 50 years quilts have become more widely regarded as an art form in their own right, from the quilts of Gees Bend, Alabama to the work showcased by the contemporary artists featured in last year's Quilts exhibition at the V&A in London. It feels slightly odd to focus on quilts and patchwork as we enter the summer months, but the annual Festival of Quilts, which takes place in August each year, means that this craft takes centre stage at this time. It's one of my favourite shows because it includes everyone and every discipline: from the novice to the professional; from the young to the old. You never know what you'll discover among the thousands of quilts on show. So it seems fitting that we also review the Quilt Museum in York in this issue: we reveal a unique collection that is documenting the past, present and future of this fabulous form. We hope you enjoy reading all about it...
