Why enter competitions?

January 2003

Because it will make you get down to work, and produce a finished piece. We all have wonderful projects inside our heads. Too often they remain there. Genuine deadlines work. If you know your mother-in-law is due in ten minutes, you'll tidy the house in a flash! If you just imagine her coming, the trick doesn't work. Of course, the subject of the competition must be appealing, and start ideas playing in your mind. Time is saved because a general theme has been laid down, and often the size, technique or materials. Some competitions, such as the Annual Members' Competition, also require research. This should not be too daunting. Lengthy essays are not usually required; illustrations and thoughtful comment are more important. Much of the information can be discovered in your own books and magazines, though libraries and museums will offer more depth. Competitions are an excellent way to stretch yourself. You may not win one of the prizes, but in a real sense you can't lose.
