January 2004
In 2001, our newly formed textile group sat down to decide upon a name. We wanted an easily remembered, dynamic work or title that suggested the merger of old members with new and the coming together of old embroidery skills with the zing and momentum of modern day textiles. A name that would allow us to explore not only textiles but also allied ideas.
After much heated debate and many suggestions, the name to emerge triumphant was Fusion. A major exhibition in Newcastle and then Durham followed and we were delighted both with the exhibition, our new group identity and our name.
Alas we now discover that not only has Ford named its new car, 'fusion'and a drug company their new drug of AIDS the same, but a textile group in the North West is also called Fusion and another, Fibrefusion. To try to clarify the situation, we have decided to add the codicil, Textiles North East to our name and intend to identify ourselves in the future as Fusion Textiles North East.
However we are left wondering if there was any way that this confusion could have been avoided and whether any other group has experienced the same dilemma? Could it be possible for any group, before finally deciding on a name, to check with a central body to ascertain if anyone else was using a particular word or title and to log one"s group name once decided upon?
