Advantages of Digital Images

September 2002

Once again I read about quality slides for submission to upcoming juried exhibitions being discussed. These are difficult to achieve by amateurs, as pointed out by Sally in the previous issue, and are very costly if done by professionals. I would like to suggest that perhaps we move with technology and start giving the option of sending digital images for selection by a jury. Obviously one does require a digital camera (which can be borrowed); most professional photographers use them. Images are shown briefly on the digital camera screen and can be repeated immediately if not satisfactory. Images are then downloaded into a computer, and your own selection process simply involves the delete key or not. The best-quality images can be sent via the internet, a zip disk or CD to the selection point. With this system the jurors need not even be in the same town or country, as images are forwarded very easily. Another advantage is that when producing the catalogue for an exhibition, the digital images are ready for the printers, thus avoiding the very costly procedure of converting slides for the printing processes.

Ed. I think this is a good idea, but must point out that digital cameras do not provide a magic button to good images. As well as the potential pitfalls to good photography as described by Stephen Brayne in the July issue, digital cameras have their own inherent problems. There can be problems with compatibility, and memory when sending images by email. If the resolution is not high enough the image pixelates once it is enlarged.
