September 2002
I feel I must write to say how heartened I am by the new appearance of Embroidery - it is new, vivid and challenging. The article 'Pharmacopoeia' is quite astonishing and I will try to see it when it comes to Kirkcaldy in February 2003. The 'Vision for Change' article on the Arraiolos carpets is a great step forward. I know of one large carpet in this technique, but much work needs to be done to keep the designs fresh. All the articles have their own appeal. And how heartened I am to see that you have reverted to the original title. Embroidery goes back nearly a hundred years. I must be almost your oldest reader - I have been a member of the Embroiderers' Guild since the last war and in two days' time I shall be 93. My sight has deteriorated, but I can still read for a short period. I have given my run (almost perfect, as someone gave me all the earlier numbers) to the Royal Scottish Museum for their library - but I still look at the numbers before passing them on and am very impressed by the difference you have made. Well done, and keep it up!
