Embroiderers of New South Wales

September 2002

I am currently undertaking research towards a PhD. My thesis looks at embroidery in New South Wales in the 1960s and early 1970s, and one aspect of the project is to investigate the links between Australian and British embroidery at this time. In particular I am trying to trace a number of people who had links of one sort or another with New South Wales. These people include: Kath Wilson who in 1970 was training with Constance Howard and intended in the future to come to NSW; Andrea Charnley, an Australian student who was at Goldsmiths' College between 1974 and 1977; Jenny Lang, who had completed a post-diploma at Goldsmiths' and visited NSW and taught workshops in 1971; Mary Barker from Brighton College who visited NSW in 1972; and Winifred Clayton from the Chaucer Institute, who visited in 1964. If anyone can provide information on these or any other embroiderers who had links with New South Wales between approximately 1960 and 1975, I would love to hear from them. I can be contacted by email:
