Letters Online

Pavilioned in Splendour

I have been browsing through my collection of back numbers of Embroidery and in the autumn 1953 Letters column, pages 88 and 90, I found lengthy epistles from ladies being very dismissive about Constance Howard. One of them foretells of her work and that of her students (featured in the November 2000 issue of Embroidery): 'I feel certain that many of the so-called brilliantly original, but often crude, designs now being made will share the same sad fate fifty years hence, or much sooner.' Her crystal ball may have been having an off day.
