Why is the 'right' style such a worry for embroiderers and textile artists? As a City & Guilds tutor and friend of several textile graduates, I'm constantly hearing:
'That's
not embroidery, where's the stitching?' (from a City
& Guilds student).
'Huh, typical City & Guilds! Far too much sewing'
(from a degree student).
Does it matter if your preferred style is packed full of stitching or only has one, as long as you have enjoyed working on it? I have had the same piece of work arouse very different comments:
'Ludicrous,
cheap and nasty'.
'Absolutely beautiful work'.
Which
one is right or wrong? They're both right, because
it's all down to taste and therefore as long as what
you are producing is enjoyable and acceptable to you,
then anybody else liking it is a bonus and those who
don't like it don't matter anyway! I feel strongly
that you should do what feels right and develop your
own style, regardless of the fashions that come and
go in embroidery - 1 stitch or 100, get on with it!
