Testament to Changing Times

September 2002

Was absolutely delighted with the current issue, just received in New York. Congratulations all around, the baby too.

In l969?70 I did a work entitled șiberated Womancs Canvasc which is 45 x 60 cm and is counted thread with female contraceptives of every variety, from the pills to various kinds of loops for cervical insert. Needless to say, I was a voice in the wilderness in those days. The Embroiderers' Guild here included it in an exhibition, and a group of women demonstrated in front of it. The piece includes a mirror so that the viewer can find out how they fit into this picture. Well, some people did not like what they saw in the mirror. It occurred to me that a psychologist would have had a field day observing the observers and it could have been the basis of a PhD dissertation. Anyhow, I was boycotted with my work for the next five years. We have certainly 'come a long way, baby' since then.
